On Sales and Things

Exhibiting at your first convention can be tough. In the 2 weeks leading up to TCAF, I had a lot of anxiety over whether I had enough stock, if the prices were set right, or if my enough people would stop by my table (101).

Here, I’ll post a breakdown of my sales and costs in case someone needs it for future reference.

I’ll start off with my costs. The hotel (~170$ for 2 nights), gas (Montreal - Toronto, 2 fill-ups: 93.80$), and parking (77.60$ for the weekend) bills I split with my friend Saul, who came down with me. That makes it about 170.70$ each (From a total of 341.40$).

To get the table space, I had to make a payment of 175$. My food expenses (7-8 meals) came out to almost $100 for the weekend.

My total costs for the trip, excluding TCAF purchases (~$75), are 445.70$.

These costs also exclude the merchandise costs. I brought 100 Comics, 250 Prints (50 x 5 designs), 26 + 15 + 4 Minis, and 92 Buttons. Why are they excluded? These I can continue to sell at any point in the future, so they’re less of an expense and more of an asset.

And now for my sales.

On Day 1, I sold 11 Comics, 32 Prints, 8 Minis, and 38 Buttons. On Day 2, I sold 6 Comics, 19 Prints, 2 Minis, and 10 Buttons.

This brings my total sales up to:

17 Comics
51 Prints
10 Minis
48 Buttons

Altogether, it brought me in a gross revenue of about 460$.

So let’s see…

Total Cost = 445.70$.

Total Revenue = 460.00$

I JUST made it.

It’s very important to keep track of your expenses on trips like these. Keep your receipts. Mark down amounts. Be very conscious of what you’re spending money on, and evaluate other options before making a decision. I just barely made it (It’s also possible that I didn’t make it. Some transactions might not’ve been recorded) but it goes to show how off I was about my initial estimate of this trip (I thought I needed more books!). Knowing this, my outlook would’ve been a lot different.

I hope this helps someone, because I sure could’ve used info like this.

NOTE: The location of my table may have played a significant role in my sales. It was a little out of the way from the main area (Table 101), but without enough numbers from other exhibitors or no way of quantifying how my sales would have been different if I was in another space, there’s no way to know for sure.

TCAF 2013 REPORT

Man, there’s so much to love about this festival. It’s my third year attending, but this was my first year exhibiting. My friend Saul joined me (and took most of the photos here), and our table buddies, Alex and Beth (aka Hazel and Bell, of the webcomic, Always Raining Here) helped make it one of the most memorable convention experiences ever. Here’s some highlights:

Finally met Jones in person! I gave him the original inks for my Helvetica guest comic, and we gushed about each other’s works.
Got to see Eric K, Flynn N, Josh PM F, Hannah Lee S, Becca T, Jessi Z, Dale O, Lauren J, Ian L, Justin W, Mike D, Caro B, Mar J, Matt, Clara and Mike Holmes again!
Met Emmy C, Gigi DG, Zac G, Ashley D (Thanks for buying my book!), Yuko O and Ananth P, Katie S, Jim D, Matt C, and Bryan Lee O’Malley (!!!) while waiting in a line.
Foot traffic was a little lighter in our area, but we still had time to talk to people and get to know them as they stopped by the tables, which is more than I could’ve hoped for.

I’m still not sure if I’ll table again next year, but I can’t thank the event organizers enough for putting together the most awe-inspiring, hip-happening and welcoming convention this side of eastern Canada.

Love your art! I regret not buying a hellboy print arghhh ;__;

TCAF is this Saturday/Sunday! For the low, low price of FREE, you can come by the Toronto Public Reference Library, peruse our wares, and engage us in delightful conversation and/or witty banter about the weather or “sports” or what have you.

There’s a whole lot to check out, at the event or around the city, but please stop by Table 101 when you have the chance. I’d love to meet you in person! It’s my first time exhibiting, so I’m a little nervous. I’ll have all the above merchandise, too, and some sheets to doodle on.
